March 10, 2023 (Friday)

Let me ask you first, what is your prefer type of fashion? The traditional clothing or the modern clothing of fashion?

But we all know that in the past , people wore clothes more closely related to their culture but today people are more likely to wear clothes from all over the world.

Fashion is an ever-changing industry, constantly influenced by cultural shifts and historical events. The evolution of fashion is a reflection of society and its values, with traditional clothing being replaced by modern trends over time. This article will explore the timeline of fashion from its traditional roots to modern-day trends, highlighting significant shifts in style and culture.

Traditional Fashion

Traditional fashion refers to clothing that is tied to a particular culture or heritage, often passed down through generations. Traditional clothing is known for its rich history and intricate designs, with each garment telling a story. For example, the sari in India is a traditional garment worn by women that have evolved over time to incorporate modern design elements. Similarly, the kimono in Japan is a traditional garment worn by men and women that has been adapted to modern trends.

Baro’t Saya is a Filipino style of women’s clothing. Traditionally, it is composed of a blouse and a long skirt with a “panuelo”. It evolved many variants, some are regional. The upper-class women wore more elaborate baro’t saya sewn with beads and colorful designs. The skirt is also wider than what lower classes wore.

These types of clothing that are “simple yet functional” that have both indigenous Filipino qualities and Spanish influence started to become prominent during the 16th-century in the Philippines.

Such clothing, through the innovation of modern-day Filipino fashion designers, can be worn in the Philippines for formal occasions and office uniforms. These “national clothes” can be made from materials such as piña, jusi, abaca, and Mindanao silk.

Barong Tagalog is a clothing worn by men. Having originated in Luzon, this clothing is may be made of pineapple fiber and is translucent, where an undershirt has to be worn together with dark pants. The “coat” or “suit”, locally known as the “Amerikana” or Americana (literally “American”) was another type of clothing introduced to the Philippines by the Americans. Worn with a tie, it is used for formal occasions.

This traditional clothing is still wear in this time. But we are now in the modern time, many people are very fashionable.

Modern Fashion

It is rapidly changing today, it can be one thing and tomorrow it is entirely different. Also, style often comes back in cycles. What was fashionable last year can become a trend tomorrow.

Modern clothing today is not just dresses, pants or jackets, instead clothing is primarily a style and a reflection of the influence of a new generation trends. For the younger generation, clothing is also a constant source of aesthetic pleasure and enjoyment, a great attitude and a way to boost the self confidence.

But there’s more, the Ukay-Ukay na pasok sa bulsa which is you can buy with affordable price.

Ukay-ukay refers to the secondhand market in the Philippines. It came from the Filipino word ‘halukay’ which means ‘to dig’ and is also synonymous with wagwagan, which came from the verb ‘wagwag’ – the act of dusting off. One word but interestingly versatile. Ukay-ukay could refer to the secondhand item, the act of buying it, and the place where you buy one. You could say “ukay lang ‘to”, “nag-ukay ako”, “sa ukay lang ‘to” and any Filipino would understand what you mean.

You know you can buy everything you want in Ukay- Ukay- because Ukay-Ukay is the most known here in Boac Marinduque. Affordability is the main driver of ukay-ukay consumption, especially, majority of its consumers are those from the lower-income group. For Filipinos of this bracket, their circumstances necessitate the choice, but it also satisfies the desire to be fashionable at the least price. Some people explains that some resort to ukay-ukay because it’s homogeneous to mall quality. Luxury brands become affordable while ‘good finds’ yield thrill and satisfaction because it’s unique, affordable, and not mass-produced.
These motivations have most likely reached the middle class up to the bourgeoisie and encouraged them to join the patronization.

Today, almost all walks of life celebrate ukay-ukay. We even see social influencers produce content such as ‘ukay-ukay hauls’ or ‘ukay-ukay challenge’.
But not only did the target market expand but the platform too.
The wagwagan culture has found its way to our social media. Instagram alone has witnessed a rise in online thrift shops where ukay-ukay items are presented more appealingly and resold with a tag higher than its buying price. Meanwhile, a new form of shopping has boomed inside Facebook called ‘live selling’. From the words themselves, it’s where a seller live streams to show off items for sale and any viewer who wants to buy an item can comment ‘mine’.
It’s an emerging business that has become a hit during the pandemic. Items for sale range from clothes, bags, and even bedsheets. Some are brand new but ukay-ukays or ‘preloved’ items are more common.

For some, it’s an alternative market but, for others, it is their only option.
But as the ukay-ukay culture grew predominant, even the rich have taken an interest. So, what is it with ukay-ukay that Filipinos from all walks of life makes it thrive?

Live selling showed how both sellers and consumers adapted to the circumstances of the pandemic – a lot of people lost their jobs while everybody’s mobility had been reduced so shopping had to be brought to our feeds.

The existence of ukay-ukay, from the streets to our screens, proved how penetrating and prevalent it is in the Filipinos’ lives but there’s an underlying truth about this industry that leaves most of its consumers confused.

That all guys for today…Guys hope that you will choice your own fashion even in a cheap price. Always remember that “life is too short to wear boring clothes…go look and try the new fashion to shine and show that you can be a fashionista 😊😊
